The Real Wendigo Legend (and Why It Has No Antlers)

The Wendigo, gaunt and antlerless, a finished page from The World's Darkest Legends coloring book

The Wendigo gets bigger every time it eats. Which is exactly why it is always starving.

If you know the Wendigo from movies, video games or Halloween costumes, you probably picture a gaunt creature with a deer skull and a crown of antlers. That version is a modern invention. The original never had antlers.

Where the story comes from

The Wiindigoo comes from the stories of the Anishinaabe and other Algonquian-speaking peoples of the northern woods and Great Lakes. In those stories, the Wiindigoo was a person once. Someone caught in a brutal winter, when food was short, who took more than their share.

And once they started, they couldn’t stop.

A hunger that grows

The cruelest detail is how the hunger works. In Basil Johnston’s telling, the Weendigo grew with every meal, so it was always exactly as hungry as before. It is never full. Not once. That is why it is drawn the way it is: skin pulled tight over bones, all that eating and nothing to show for it.

The real warning

The scariest part of this legend was never meeting a monster in the woods. It was the idea that anyone could become one. The stories were told in winter, when the temptation to take too much was real, and they carried a clear lesson: greed feeds itself, and it never stops on its own.

These are living stories that belong to the communities that tell them. If the Wendigo grabbed you, Basil Johnston’s writing on Anishinaabe tradition is a good place to go deeper.

The Wendigo is one of the 40 monsters in The World’s Darkest Legends, a monochrome coloring book from Pencil Box Press.
